  8. dimensional scene outside.  To 
  9. see pictures in a camera 
  10. obscura clearly, the entire 
  11. room must be dark.

  13. In the opening years of the 
  14. seventeenth century, the 
  15. French philosopher Ren├⌐ 
  16. Descartes described an 
  17. experiment that would reveal 
  18. the visual image as it appears 
  19. on the retina of the eye. One 
  20. could remove the eye of an ox 
  21. and place it in a frame, 
  22. scraping the back of the eye to 
  23. make it translucent, he said. By 
  24. looking at the retina, one could 
  25. see how the world was projected 
  26. on it. To understand perceptual 
  27. constancyΓÇöΓÇôour tendency to see 
  28. the properties of objects as 
  29. unvarying despite ever-
  30. changing retinal stimuliΓÇöΓÇôand 
  31. most other aspects of 
  32. perception, we first must know 
  33. how scenes actually are 
  34. represented on the retina.
